Pacific Light: Macro Footage of Ink, Oil and Soap Shot by Ruslan Khasanov.
Conscious of space, time and memory, making use of contrast and juxtaposition, and inspired by the colonial mining industry in his birth province of Katanga, Congolese mutli-media artist Sammy Baloji combines these elements to create a striking visual platform where a harsh past meets a desolate present in his series 2006 titled Mémoire. Using black-and-white colonial images of Congolese migrant mine workers, extracted from archives, against present-day photographs of the brownfields once owned by Gécamines (Société Générale des Carrières et des Mines), Baloji critically illustrates the crude nature of Belgian colonialism in Congo and some of the physical remnants of this historical past.
